Walking Tour through the rainforest of Lamington National Park, South Eastern Queensland
Join us as we discover this amazing world heritage listed rainforest.
Our accommodation and meals will be at the award winning eco lodge “O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat” located on the edge of Lamington National Park. We literally step out of our door and we walk into another world!
Each day we explore a different section of this amazing rainforest - it is home to ancient trees, extensive flora and fauna and more than 500 waterfalls. The highlight of course is the vibrant birdlife in the park - over
160 subtropical species have been recorded and Lamington is regarded internationally as one
of the premier birdwatching locations in Australia. For the early risers each morning at 6.45 am there is a 45m guided
birdwatching tour available!
In terms of walking this park is a jewel in the crown of rainforest bushwalking destinations in Queensland. Lamington NP
contains over 320 kms of trails for us to choose from which all lead to spectacular waterfalls, lookouts and some of
QLD’s most significant wilderness areas. Because our lodge is located on the edge of the park, we are able to commence
each walk directly from our accommodation which makes for an extremely relaxing tour.
Apart from the obvious flora and fauna highlights our stay is also an opportunity to step back in time and learn about
the history of the pioneering O’Reilly family who started farming on the plateau in 1912 and established the lodge in 1926. In 1937 the area became famous when Bernard O’Reilly heroically rescued the 2 survivors of the Stinson plane crash.
On this tour we are transferred directly from Gold Coast airport to O’Reilly’s. We stop on route in the quaint rural town of Canungra nestled in the foothills of Lamington NP. On our return journey we call in at O’Reilly’s Canungra vineyard and Mount view Alpaca
farm for lunch before our afternoon drop off at the Gold Coast airport.
Our Hotels and Cuisine
We are excited to be staying in O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat surrounded by the beauty of Lamington National Park. Our Mountain View rooms offer the best views in the retreat where after a day of walking you can relax on your balcony with an unobstructed view of the McPherson mountain ranges.
Each morning enjoy a healthy buffet breakfast to get you on your way. Returning from our walks we have O’Reilly’s delicious afternoon teas to look forward to - tea , coffee and hot chocolate plus scrumptious scones, muffins or lamingtons.
In the evening we can enjoy a relaxing pre dinner drink in the rooftop rainforest bar where we can chat about the next days walk. In the dining room enjoy a delicious 3 course meal including a great selection of wines. Don’t be surprised to see a brushtail possum or even a sugar glider during dinner and in the morning regent and satin bower birds can be seen bathing infront of the bay windows.
After dinner enjoy the open fire in the library - it’s the perfect place to wind down while immersing yourself in the amazing array of books and memorabilia which have been collected over the last 90+ years.

A wonderful walk as usual with Walkabout Tours. Graeme is a great leader and always makes our walks interesting. Thank you for a wonderful trip with lots of laughs and amazing walks. You will definitely see us again in the near future and hopefully we will also connect again with some of the wonderful Walkabout friends we have made. It is the way you, Gabriela and your staff Interact with your walkers that creates the relaxed and fun atmosphere that we enjoy so much. Thank you again." Gary and Sandra from Hervey Bay, QLD [2022]
Well organised, but relaxed few days in a beautiful part of Australia. Appreciated the opportunity to learn about the local history, flora and fauna, and observe and interact with the many native birds. Graeme is an engaging host who ensures that each member of the group has their interests and needs considered. Walks were arranged to capture the amazing scenery, and gently challenge us, but also leave a with feeling a sense of achievement at the end of the day." Judy from Adelaide, South Australia [2022]
Thank you Graeme for a fantastic tour. One of the best aspects was that it was so varied, great walks (just a little bit up & a little bit down), wonderful and exciting scenery, great museum in Albany and the wonderful tree top walk in the Kauri Forest, how amazing. Of course I haven't forgotten the great food and our visit to the vineyards. All in all a great holiday. Thanks again." Helen from Mosman NSW, Australia [2021]
