Forcalquier and the surroundings

There is plenty of free parking near the apartments and it is possible to drive to the bottom of rue Saint-Mary to unload luggage. The apartments are located in a charming stone house which stands in a quiet cobble stoned street and leads to the Citadel where a 13th century castle once stood. Today the Notre Dame de Provence Chapel stands in its place and commands a magnificent view of the surrounding countryside. The Citadel, as the hill is passionately known by the locals, is a real ‘green oases in the centre of town and a beautiful spot for an early morning or evening stroll.

Forcalquier has a population of 4,500 and from the Apartments it is a 5 minute walk to the centre of town. Here you can buy everything you need for your stay in Forcalquier. There are numerous bakers, a butcher, an excellent fruit and vegetable shop, pastry and chocolate shop, 2 supermarkets, delicatessen and very good wine shop (there are also 2 large Supermarkets at each end of the town) 3 banks, Post Office, 2 chemists and a news agency. Of course there are plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants. We have a list of the ones we recommend and we are only too happy to talk about the other ones we take our groups to in the nearby villages.

Of course one of the big attractions of Forcalquier is the Monday morning market. It is renowned as being one of the most colourful in Provence and of course one can do the weekly shopping direct from the producers. There is an enormous range of food available - local cheeses, fruit and vegetables, organic breads, herbs and spices, fresh fish from Marseille, Provencal fabrics and pottery etc.

Forcalquier is ideally located in terms of visiting the nearby tourist sites. Avignon is 1.5 hours, Aix en Provence 1 hour, Marseille 1.5, Nice 2.5, and the French Alps 1.5 hours. Of course it is preferable to have a car. If you plan not to have a car then it is possible to visit all the towns just mentioned using public transport.

Touring bikes can be hired in the town. The Forcalquier region is famous for its wonderful cycling path which leads all the way to Cavaillon near Avignon, a distance of 100 kms. Otherwise there are plenty of quiet country lanes which are suitable for cycling. We can help you with information.

There are also 500 km’s of marked walking tracks in the region. Basically the area forms a square bordered by 2 mountain ranges to the North and South and by 2 rivers to the East and West. It is ideal for walking as there is an immense variety of landscapes influenced by both a continental climate from the Alps and a Mediterranean climate from the south. We are happy to discuss the different walks with you.

Guided Walking HolidaysPerfect holiday
Perfect holidays at the Clarke Family, the flat is beautiful, spacious and clean, there is everything you need (coffee maker, dishwasher, soap, terrace...)! Thanks Catherine for the warm welcoming and the good communication. Also, Forcalquier is a very nice village with a lot of good restaurants, antic shops, art galleries... I recommend! 5/5."

Guided Walking HolidaysEverything we needed for relaxing
My daughter and I stayed in this lovely apartment for a week. We were greeted by Celeste in the village and she guided us to the car park and showed us to the apartment. Forcalquier itself had everything we needed and we enjoyed our time exploring the shops, bars and restaurants, especially the local wares on Monday's market day. The Citadel and it's 360 view, a short walk up from the apartment, was a highlight. We used Forcalquier as a base to explore Provence bit I would have been happy to just to spend the week fossicking in the village. Graeme was very welcoming and was ready to help with anything that arose. The apartment itself is lovely with everything we needed for relaxing or for cooking up a storm. The courtyard was a delightful suntrap for relaxing with a book or nibbling local wares on a spring day."

L'appartement est très bien équipé proche des restaurants et des commodités. Nous le recommandons sans aucune hésitation pour son authenticité, son emplacement."

Guided Walking HolidaysAbsolute pleasure
You may not get a better connection with Forcalquier than staying with The Clarke Family. Graeme is a local expert, and wonderful human, with so much to offer not just in Forcalquier but all of Provence. Graeme helped us decide on what adventures to go on in a day from driving through the Gorge, to seeing other local villages, to his favorite croissant. What an absolute pleasure. The apartment is beautiful and peaceful. It is nice and dark at night which helps with jet lag, and very quiet. I couldn't have asked for a better spot in one of my favourite towns on the globe. I travel with my female partner, and that was very welcome with The Clarke Family. Traveling as a gay couple is not always easy, but we felt at ease and loved with open arms. All in all, you will not be disappointed. Thank you Clarke Family!"

Perfect location, and lovely apartment with everything we needed. Right in the center of town on a quintessential cobbled French village street. We were able to take many cycling trips right from the door to see the lavender and sunflowers and other quaint towns. We fell in love with Provence and it's people during our stay."

Guided Walking HolidaysCharming
We had a great week in this charming flat. The apartment is in a quiet street but just a few steps from restaurants and shops. It has a lovely balcony with great views on the beautiful garden, the hills of the Citadelle and the Luberon. The other rooftop terrace is ideal to sunbathe and offers great views on the Lurs region. The apartment has everything one needs and is decorated with great taste. Graeme welcomed us warmly and gave us good advice on the surroundings. We really hope to get back."

Guided Walking HolidaysFantastic property
This is a fantastic property - you could literally not ask for more charm in the village location. The apartment is very spacious and very well appointed; with anything you could want or need to make it feel that you are at home. The hosts are so friendly, helpful and gracious - they made us feel completely welcome, and gave us excellent advice on where to hike in the area as well as driving tips and so forth. The village is utterly charming, tranquil without being boring (not at all) and is definitely a place we would love to return to. Thank you to Graeme and Gabriela for making our week in Provence such a special time!"

Guided Walking HolidaysMore than met my expectations
This is a charming apartment at the very heart of Forcalquier. It is very well equipped and very comfortable. The owners provide access to maps and guides to the town and local region. There are plenty of local walks of varying distances, all easily navigable with an excellent signing system. The apartment more than met my expectations, and I would recommend it strongly to those who want to be at the centre of this lively, picturesque town."

Guided Walking HolidaysSpacious and well appointed
The apartment is charming - one of a number surrounding an internal courtyard. It is tastefully renovated & has real character. It is spacious & well appointed. It is literally a minute's walking to the centre of town & parking is 2 minutes away. We would have preferred that wi-fi was available within the apartment - it was available in the common room across the courtyard and there was no video signal for the TV."

Guided Walking HolidaysGreat experience
This was a great experience, Gabriela met us as arranged and directed us to the apartment where we unloaded our car and then we were able to park in the area Gabriela advised. The apartment was well furnished and had all the amenities advertised, we were moved to a bigger apartment at no extra cost due to a double booking and we appreciated the extra space. the wifi worked well once we worked out the correct password, the beds were comfortable and the bathrooms well appointed. One of the better accommodations during seven weeks in Europe. gabriela was very helpful with suggestions and recommendations and lent us a map for our trip to Verdon Gorge."

Guided Walking HolidaysLovely apartment
We had another great time in this lovely apartment in Forcalquier. Natalie was extremely helpful this visit and Graeme communicated with me several times to make sure we had everything we needed for a nice stay there. We could not improve on our review of our last stay in May 2013. Forcalquier is a beautiful little town with everything one might need within close reach and it is the perfect base for exploring this beautiful region of Haute-de-Provence about an hour north of Aix-en-Provence."

Guided Walking HolidaysA lovely stay!
Our hosts were away during our visit but they were very helpful and left us with lots of advice for seeing Provence. They arranged for a family friend to meet us and show us around the apartment, which all went without a hitch. The apartment was as described... Comfortable bed, clean bathroom and so on. Parking is free and just up the road. From Forcalquier, the Gorges du Verdon, Avignon and Aix-en-Provence are all within driving distance, as well as the Luberon. In the town itself, there is a lovely little creperie and a traditional French restaurant both within 2 minutes walk, and the apartment is just minutes from the town square (home to an amazing market on Monday mornings) or a short walk up to the citadel for views of the surrounding countryside. A lovely stay! Thank you."

Guided Walking HolidaysA delight
Perfectly corresponds to the description. Beautiful old building lovingly restored by the owners, in the center of the old village. So calm and peaceful while at the same time being 2 mins away from the restaurants, squares and new parts of town. The apartment has been carefully decorated and fitted out and the little terrace was a delight!"

Guided Walking HolidaysFantastic location
Fantastic location, couldn't be better for the city. Extremely spacious flat - everything in the kitchen you could possibly want, comfortable bed and the courtyard is a lovely bonus. It was super clean, beautifully decorated and a real home away from home. We really enjoyed our stay and are so glad we picked this place for our time in Forcalquier. On foot you are two seconds from the centre of town, but only 2 minutes walk from parking from which you can easily get to and from by car. Graeme was really communicative and so helpful beforehand and they have tons of local knowledge with a great book of recommendations in the flat. 100% recommend!"

Guided Walking HolidaysWe felt right at home
My fiance and I were looking for a quiet town in Provence to spend a relaxing couple of days. Graeme's apartment turned out to be the ideal place for us, and we were just so happy being there. Graeme is a professional host and has all the information you'd want about the area, including maps. He gave us some great recommendations on where to eat and hike during our stay. We even spent one evening chatting/drinking with Graeme and he was so gracious to invite us into his home. The apartment itself is ideal - we felt right at home. The street was very quiet, though just around the corner from the center of town. The wifi wasn't accessible in the rooms, but we could use it in his beautiful courtyard. Forcalquier is not far from the main highway, but it wasn't overrun with tourists, nor was it too quiet. There were plenty of restaurants, shops and even live music at night. We really wanted to extend our stay, but unfortunately he already had the unit reserved. We highly recommend his place to anyone exploring Provence."

The living room, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and small TV room are really well arranged and stay in this apartment was very nice. Graeme was very welcoming, and the area is really beautiful. Being biker roads around are highly recommended for long walks :) When we come back in the area we probably choose again this host. - Translated from French

Guided Walking HolidaysWe wanted to immediately return
We wanted to immediately return, when we had just arrived. What a great place to find in South of France! Graeme set up an easy meeting point for when we arrived. The apartment was in perfect - and charming - condition. It was much better in person than even the pictures, and we thoroughly enjoyed the courtyard for a post-market lunch and siesta. The location is two blocks from the very center of the town but very quiet except for the few church bells. We would recommend this apartment to anyone, but especially people staying longer than a day or two. The kitchen is a real treat, so plan to make a few meals. Also ideal space with a toddler."

Guided Walking HolidaysFar exceeded our expectations
Graeme and Gabriela's house in Forcalquier far exceeded our expectations. Not only was Forcalquier one of most charming Provencal towns we'd experienced, but the apartment was perfectly decorated and nicely situated on historical Rue St. Mary (steps away from the Citadelle). Graeme was a tremendous host (as Gabriela was traveling) and gave us wonderful recommendations for the surrounding area. The house is literally 50 steps from centre ville and various cafes and shops. The Monday market is not to be missed, if you have the opportunity to stay at their house. We highly recommend the house, Forcalquier and our hosts. We'll be back again soon."

It has a gorgeous garden sitting area with ample of candles to have romantic dinners. Flat is centrally located from cafes and shops. Perfect location for the Monday market, which is an absolute must to see and buy lots of local French goodies. The owners are super responsive and a breeze to deal with."

I'm not certain that we could stumble upon more gracious hosts than Graeme & Gabriela, to start off our break in Provence. From the outset Graeme was very generous with his knowledge of the region and thanks to him we discovered incredible parts of Provence that weren't on our radar. The apartment is spacious, comfortable and well equipped, including one of the biggest showers in southern France. We will most definitely book in for a longer stay on our next trip!"
