December is an excellent time to explore Victoria’s High Country on foot, with long daylight hours and summer conditions in the Australian Alps. Days can be warm and sunny, particularly at lower elevations, while temperatures can be cooler at higher altitudes. Mountain weather can change quickly, so layered clothing, sun protection and waterproof outerwear are recommended.
The High Country is known for its snow gum forests, open mountain ridgelines and distinctive alpine landscapes. Walking through the Alpine National Park offers opportunities to appreciate the region’s native flora and, with a little luck, spot some of its wildlife. The scenery changes with elevation, making each walk a different experience.
The journey begins and ends in Melbourne, with transport to and from Victoria’s High Country organised as part of the tour. During your stay, Dinner Plain serves as a central base, with some walks starting directly from the village and others a short drive away. This means less time travelling between destinations and more time enjoying the alpine landscapes on foot.
