14_days CROSS COUNTRY SKIING IN NORWAY

NORWAY

GUIDED WALKING HOLIDAYS IN NORWAY

We were happy to announce our first Winter tour to Norway in 2011. This beautiful country has long been one of our favourite destinations and the 14 day Cross Country Skiing Tour will feature again in our 2012 holiday program. We shall base ourselves in two of the most famous Cross Country Skiing areas in Norway - Rondane National Park and Jotenheimen National Parks. Those of you who have been with us on our Summer Walks in Norway know how lovely these areas are - well in Winter they are even more beautiful! Our Cross Country Skiing Holiday will operate towards the end of March when the days are getting longer and the sun is getting warmer.

Our first 7 days we shall spend at Rondablikk next door to the vast expanse of the Rondane National Park.

The area has lots of very well prepared skiing tracks which allow cross country ski tours for different levels. On a small training hill in front of the hotel we can learn or refresh skiing knowledge and "experts" can try their first "telemark" turns. Telemark is a traditional technique to go downhill on cross country skies, which is fun but can be challenging, however, it is not needed for the normal trails. Being in Rondane we are in the "World of Peer Gynt", the legendary character and ;during our stay we shall get to know his legend and stories.

The Rondane mountains in winter are like a white desert as the snow capped hills appear like white sand dunes. The tracks around Rondablikk, at 910m, are quite flat in the valley at ;Lake Furusjoen. Tours through the forest can be a bit more up and down but extremely beautiful after new snow. A climb to Mount Zukkertoppen at 1,213m as well as other tours on the nearby" fjell" give us stunning views all around Rondane N.P.

Our second stay leads us to Sjodalen in the community of Oppdalen, next door to the Jotunheimen National Park. Known as the "home of the giants", it contains Norway's highest mountains. The scenery here is truly dramatic and nearby you ;will also find the famous Beseggen - one of our favourite walks in our Summer program and probably the most popular walk in Norway.

On one of our cross country tours we pass close by the Sikkilsdalen valley, where the "Prinsehytta" is. This is the Royal Mountain Chalet used by the Norwegian Royal family and friends for hunting and skiing, definitely an indicator for the beauty of this region! Around Hindsaeter we have well prepared trails for various tours in the valley and even on the "fjell". We also can do tours to Maurvangen and to Lemonsjoen. Sometimes we make our own tracks through the forest and over the fjell. On sunny days we can even see back to the Rondane National Park in the far distance.

At both our destinations you can also try your hand at snow shoeing - it is a lot of fun and Norway is a wonderful area for this activity.

OUR HOTELS & CUISINE

Our hotel on the edge of the Rondane N.P. is located just above the tree line and commands glorious views of the National Park. It has numerous comfortable lounges and also an indoor heated swimming pool and sauna, very welcome after a day in the snow! In the evening relax in the dining room as you enjoy Rondablikks culinary adventure - the "koldtbord" - a buffet offering a wonderful selection of fish and seafood specialties, salads, meat dishes, breads, delicious cheeses and various desserts.

The Hindsaeter Fjellhotel has a long tradition as a mountain lodge. It was built in 1898 and still today you can sit around the old; fireplace and reminisce about how the early pioneers constructed these large timber dwellings. Situated in the Sjodalen Valley at the foot of the Jotunheimen N.P you have great views from the hotel terrace and the panorama lounge towards this winter wonderland.

Our hosts, Andre and Karola, will spoil us with Norwegian specialties and; are always happy to tell stories about the hotel and the region. In addition to their excellent meals, they have a great wine list with wines from all over Europe. As an added bonus they have just opened their cosy wellness centre with two saunas and a spa, the best way to relax after coming back from a days skiing!
